NAFDAC headquarters building in Abuja: 35 containers of Tramadol seized

Prof. Moji Adeyeye, Director General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says no fewer than 35 containers of Tramadol have been seized at various ports in the country.
Adeyeye disclosed this while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.
She said nine out of the seized containers of tramadol were released to NAFDAC by the Nigeria Custom Service (NCS), and had been destroyed by her agency.

NAFDAC-DG, Prof. Moji Adeyeye: says Customs has only released nine of the containers
“We are seriously working with the Customs on this and each time they seize any container, they usually invite us to come and see the containers with Tramadol.
“So far, 35 containers were seized and only nine of them have been handed over to NAFDAC which we have destroyed,” she said.
She, however, decried the delay by the Customs in handing over the rest of the containers to her agency.
The NAFDAC boss stated that tramadol was a restricted drug but had been abused by Nigerian youths who use it without prescription.
According to Adeyeye, who is also a professor of pharmacology, the drug destroys children’s brain thereby threatening the future generation of the Nation.
She lauded the present administration for placing an embargo on codeine, which she said, like tramadol, should only be given through prescription as done in advanced country.
The director general said the agency was more determined to stem the menace of illicit and fake drugs in the country.

What is Tramadol?
Tramadol, sold under the brand name Ultram among others, is an opioid pain medication used to treat moderate to moderately severe pain. When taken by mouth in an immediate-release formulation, the onset of pain relief usually occurs within an hour. It is often combined with paracetamol (acetaminophen) as this is known to improve the efficacy of tramadol in relieving pain.

The drug called Tramadol
Common side effects include: constipation, itchiness and nausea.Serious side effects may include seizures, increased risk of serotonin syndrome, decreased alertness, and drug addiction.A change in dosage may be recommended in those with kidney or liver problems. It is not recommended in those who are at risk of suicide. While not recommended in women who are breastfeeding, those who take a single dose should not generally stop breastfeeding.
It works by binding to the μ-opioid receptor and by acting as a serotonin–norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor (SNRI). Tramadol is in the benzenoid class. In the body it is converted to desmetramadol, which is a more potent opioid.[10]
Tramadol was launched and marketed as “Tramal” by the German pharmaceutical company Grünenthal GmbH in 1977 in West Germany, and 20 years later it was launched in the UK, US, and Australia. It is marketed under many brand names worldwide.

Xinhua/NAN) A U.S. man who was found innocent after serving 25 years in prison has received 10 million U.S. dollars on Wednesday as compensation.
The settlement set a record for the city of Philadelphia, in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania, where Anthony Wright, who was 20-years-old when the alleged crime occurred, was sentenced to life without parole for a 1991 rape and murder case.

DNA evidence discovered later proved that Wright was innocent.
Innocence Project, an activist group promoting DNA evidence in criminal investigations, said in a statement that Wright was the victim of poor investigation procedures by the police, who allegedly threatened to beat Wright if he wouldn’t sign a confession written by the police.

The group said Wright now 44, is the 344th DNA exoneree in the nation.
It would be recalled that the Philadelphia district attorney’s office in 1991 indicted a 20-year-old black man named Anthony Wright on a charge of capital murder after describing the crime as “heinous.”
A 77-year-old woman had been robbed in her home, then raped and stabbed to death.

The case against Wright was turned around on a confession written by the police, which Wright had signed.

Wright maintained from the beginning that he signed the document only after interrogating officers threatened to “poke his eye out.”
He was later convicted after the jury deadlocked 7–5 in favor of a death sentence.
In Pennsylvania, death penalty verdicts must be unanimous and as such Wright was sent to prison for life without the possibility of parole.

A three-year-old toddler allegedly shot and killed their one-year-old sister in a tragic accident in Memphis, Tennessee.

Little Robin Keefer was killed after 25-year-old Shawn Moore reportedly put the two children in a bed in which he had been keeping his gun.

Memphis Police arrested Moore on Friday and charged him with criminally negligent homicide, being a convicted felon in possession of a handgun and tampering with evidence.

Fox Carolina reported witnesses heard the gun go off at an apartment complex and Robin was rushed to the hospital.
Police blocked streets across Memphis so the child could be rushed to hospital, however, she died on arrival.

A police affidavit said: ‘It was determined that Robin Keefer was actually shot by her 3-year-old sibling with Moore’s firearm.’
Robin’s aunt Wanda Keefer said: ‘She was a sweet baby, she was always smiling. Never cried too much unless she was hungry.’
Police said convicted felon Moore reportedly took the weapon and fled the area, but later turned himself into authorities and was booked in jail.

Police end interview after suspect won't stop fartingSean Sykes Jnr kept farting in his interview (Picture: Jackson County Detention Center)

Police in Kansas were forced to stop an interrogation in September – because the suspect wouldn’t stop farting.

Sean Sykes Jnr was taken in for questioning over gun and drug charges but cops had to end the interview early due to his flatulence.

Local newspaper the Kansas City Star reported that Sykes ‘leaned to one side of his chair and released a loud fart’ when asked his address.

Detectives wrote: ‘Mr. Sykes continued to be flatulent and I ended the interview.’
Details have been released of his interview after he was brought in for questioning two months ago.
He denied knowledge of the items and police decided not to charge the 24-year-old for intent to sell cocaine and being in possession of a firearm.

Sykes was released but he was pulled over a second time this month in Kansas City.
During a search of his car, Kansas Police allegedly found a backpack with drugs and two handguns in.
One of the guns, a .357 Magnum, had been reported stolen a few days before.
Sykes has now been charged with stolen firearm offences and possession with intent to sell cocaine.
The detective’s report emerged during a court appearance Sykes made on Monday.
He is currently being held in custody until a bond can be set.

A Former German Nurse serving a life sentence for murdering patients by injecting them with a deadly medication is now suspected of killing more than 100 people.

If he is found guilty, this would make him one of the nation’s worst serial murderers.
Prosecutors in the northern German city of Oldenburg said on Thursday that toxicological investigations have identified a further 16 deaths that the nurse, identified as Niels H under Germany’s strict privacy laws was responsible for.

In August, Oldenburg police said they believed that the 40-year-old H may have killed an additional 84 patients.
An Oldenburg court sentenced H to life in prison in Feb. 2015, in six cases of murder or attempted murder.

Prosecutors have signaled plans to bring more charges against H in 2018.
The bodies of scores of former patients treated by the suspect have been exhumed as part of the investigations into the deaths at the hospitals in Oldenburg and the city of Delmenhorst.
However, many of the patients who died have since been cremated.

During his 2015 trial, the former nurse confessed to murdering more patients during his career, prompting police to establish a special commission to investigate deaths at two clinics where he worked.

The commission has been analysing hundreds of medical records and has exhumed more than 100 bodies to test them for traces of drugs.

According to multiple online reports, unknown gunmen invaded a branch of Diamond bank in Owerri, Imo state capital. The hoodlums in their numbers reportedly attacked the bank with highly sophisticated weapons this morning and they made away with an undisclosed sum of money and leaving some person(s) injured.

The ever busy Douglas road branch which is situated opposite "AMA AWUSA" market became noticeably scanty due to the incident. Business activities at the branch were equally grounded.

According to ‎Prince Micheal Chika‎, few minutes later, the police operatives arrived the scene.

An investigation is still on going to apprehend the men of the underworld.

A couple, Obinna Arthur and his wife, Chinyere who reportedly raped, recorded and posted their neighbour’s wife nude video on social media has been ordered to be tried for conspiracy and rape at the Lagos High Court.

This was the outcome of the advice by Directorate of Public Prosecution, DPP, who has now taken over the matter for prosecution.

In letter dated 3 November, 2017 to the Deputy Commissioner of Police at SCIID Panti, Yaba, signed by the Assistant Director of DPP, Mr. M.T. Adeoye, the directorate stated so.

The advice stated that going by the facts available in the duplicate case file, that it was obvious there were sufficient facts to establish prima facie case of sexual assault and sending of obscene pictures on social media by the suspects.

It further stated that the case file revealed that Obinna called the husband of the victim, one Kenneth Nwakaji to come and collect his N1.2m share of the profit they made on a business transaction they had together. But Kenneth was unable to go and had to send his wife who was the victim to go to the hotel and collect the money on his behalf.

P.M.EXPRESS reports that when the wife went to the hotel in Egbeda area of Lagos, Obinna offered her a bottle of Guinness malt drink which she drank and immediately became unconscious. It was scooped that Obinna removed all her clothes in the hotel room and sexually assaulted her.

He recorded the video of the whole assault on his phone as a bargaining power to her husband to forget his own share of the profit.

When the victim – a mother of three kids regained her consciousness, she discovered that she was totally Unclad and was then shown the video of the assault.

She could not raise alarm because she was scared of losing her marriage.

However, on 27 March 2017 she discovered that her nude pictures had gone viral in the neighbourhood and it was traced to Obinna’s wife, Chinyere.

The DPP informed the police that the duplicated file brought to their office was retained to enable the office to obtain the necessary information papers to file the matter at the High Court.

P.M.EXPRESS had earlier reported the incident after the police at Area M Command, Idimu arrested the couple at Santos Estate in Akowonjo, Lagos.

When the matter came up at the Magistrates court, it could not hold as the matter was now billed for Lagos High Court.

P.M.EXPRESS gathered that the couple who had four kids had remained in prison custody because their relations refused to bail them.

Gunman killed 26 people in church in deadliest mass shooting in Texas historyPolice said that 26 people were shot dead at the First Baptist Church in Sutherland Springs, Texas (Jay Janner/Austin American-Statesman via AP)

A man opened fire inside a church in a small South Texas community on Sunday, killing 26 people and wounding about 20 others in what the governor called the deadliest mass shooting in the state’s history.

Officials did not identify the attacker during a news conference Sunday night, but two other officials – one a US official and one in law enforcement – who were briefed on the investigation identified him as Devin Kelley.

The US official said Kelley lived in a San Antonio suburb and does not appear to be linked to organised terrorist groups. The official said investigators are looking at social media posts Kelley may have made in the days before Sunday’s attack, including one that appeared to show an AR-15 semiautomatic weapon.

At the news conference, Freeman Martin, the regional director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, said the attacker was dressed all in black, wearing tactical gear and a ballistic vest, when he arrived at a gas station across from the First Baptist Church at around 11.20am local time.

He crossed the street and started firing a Ruger AR rifle at the church, and continued after entering the building. As he left, he was confronted by an armed resident who chased him.

A short time later, the suspect was found dead in his vehicle at the county line, Mr Martin said. The exact circumstances of his death are unclear. There were several weapons inside the vehicle.

Mr Martin said investigators were not ready to discuss a possible motive for the attack. He said the dead ranged in age from five to 72 years old. Twenty-three were found dead in the church, two were found outside and one died after being taken to a hospital.

Federal law enforcement swarmed the small community 30 miles south-east of San Antonio after the attack to offer assistance, including ATF investigators and members of the FBI’s evidence collection team.

Among those killed was the 14-year-old daughter of the church’s pastor, Frank Pomeroy, and his wife, Sherri. Sherri Pomeroy wrote in a text message to the AP that she and her husband were out of town in two different states when the attack occurred.

‘We lost our 14 year old daughter today and many friends,’ she wrote. ‘Neither of us have made it back into town yet to personally see the devastation. I am at the charlotte airport trying to get home as soon as i can.’

The wounded were taken to hospitals. Video on KSAT television showed first responders taking a stretcher from the church to a waiting AirLife helicopter. Eight victims were taken by medical helicopter to the Brooke Army Medical Center, the military hospital said.

Megan Posey, a spokeswoman for Connally Memorial Medical Centre, which is in Floresville and about 10 miles from the church, said ‘multiple’ victims were being treated for gunshot wounds.

Alena Berlanga, a Floresville resident who was monitoring the chaos on a police scanner and in Facebook community groups, said everyone knows everyone else in the sparsely populated county. Sutherland Springs has only a few hundred residents.

‘This is horrific for our tiny little tight-knit town,’ said Alena Berlanga. ‘Everybody’s going to be affected and everybody knows someone who’s affected,’ she said.

President Donald Trump tweeted from Japan, where is his on an Asian trip, that he was monitoring the situation. Texas Governor Greg Abbott called the shooting an ‘evil act.’

The toddler had been dropped off at her neighbour’s house so she could play with their two children, aged two and four, when the alleged rape happened.

Police say she was raped in their one-room home in New Delhi, India, on Wednesday and was then dumped outside her house while she was bleeding.

Swati Maliwal, the head of the Delhi Commission for Women, said: ”The poor child cannot even speak, she is just laying there.’

The suspect, who is reportedly 33, was arrested yesterday following the alleged assault in the Aman Vihar neighbourhood.

His wife is believed to have been working on the terrace at the time of the rape, according to First Post.

The man has now been charged with aggravated penetrative sexual assault under India’s Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.

If found guilty, he could face life imprisonment.
The attack is just one of many cases of rape that have come to light in India in recent years.

She was only listened after she apprehended two of the alleged attackers herself.

Prisoners don't have freedom of their own
Prisoners in China want transfer to Nigeria

Many prisoners have inundated Nigeria, asking to be transferred from Chinese prisons, but such transfers are impossible for now.

Transfer of prisoners from China to Nigeria can only be possible if there is a signed treaty to the effect by the two countries.

There is no treaty between the countries for prisoners’ transfer, when that exists the transfer of prisoners would be possible, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has said.

Dabiri-Erewa said at the seminar on Nigeria-China relations in Abuja on Thursday that, “We get a lot of appeals and some prisoners say they want to move from one prison there to another, it is not going to happen”.

“We have been talking to them but their law is their law. My appeal to Nigerians is to obey the laws of that country because it is getting tougher; they have sanctions and they follow through.”
She also said that Nigerian businesses were thriving in China.

Dabiri-Erewa urged Nigerian citizens in China to abide by the laws of that country.

She said that there were about 500 Nigerians in Chinese prisons for various offences.
She also refuted claims that there were thousands of Nigerians detained in Chinese prisons.
“You hear 2000 but that is exaggerated. I think we have less than 500 Nigerians in Chinese prisons.
She urged Nigerians to learn from the Chinese culture of discipline and persistence in promoting national development.

“Discipline and leadership are what we should learn from China; they have a plan for the next 20 years, even the young ones in schools are being groomed for that plan.
“ They also have the we can do spirit, it is working for them.

She also called for continuous support for the current administration’s effort in the fight against corruption

The Anambra State Police Command on Thursday arrested two publishers in Onitsha who were allegedly printing handbills for the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra in respect of November 18 election boycott in Anambra State.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr. Garba Umar, disclosed this at a press conference in his office at Amawbia, Anambra State. Umar said his command would not tolerate any IPOB activity in the state in any guise.
He said, “After a discreet procedure in collating intelligence on miscreants and members of the proscribed IPOB, the Onitsha area command raided a printing press where thousands of posters and handbills were being printed.”

Some of the fliers read, ‘Call for referendum is not call for war;’ ‘No election in Anambra State,’ ‘Biafrans declare sit at home,’ ‘Anyone who insists on participating in the Anambra election will be doing so at his or her own risk,’ and so on.
The Anambra CP warned that he would not spare any group or individual who try to disrupt the peace in the state, while calling on residents to ensure they report any attempt to cause a breach of the peace in their area.
Garba said the printers arrested would help the police in tracking down the IPOB members who gave them the job. He said,”IPOB is proscribed and there won’t be a hiding place for them in Anambra State.
We won’t tolerate any insignia of the group in this state. If your nickname is IPOB, please change it now; otherwise, we’ll arrest and prosecute you.”

A Pakistani woman has been arrested after a plot to murder her husband with a poisoned glass of milk led to the death of 15 of his family members.

Aasia Bibi, 21, was forced to marry Amjad Akram against her will in September.

Two months into the unhappy marriage, the young bride, who was allegedly in love with another man, hatched a plot to kill her husband.
On October 24, she poisoned the glass of milk for her 25-year-old husband.

But after Amjad refused to drink the glass of milk, Aasia’s mother-in-law used the tainted milk to make Lassi – a popular traditional yogurt-based drink in the Indian Subcontinent.
The beverage was served to 27 of Amjad’s family members and after drinking it, they started showing poisoning symptoms.

Fifteen people died in hospital because of the severe intoxication while 12 others are still critical.
The incident took place in Daulat Paur area in Muzaffargarh in the southwestern Punjab province of Pakistan and was reported on Sunday.

A senior police officer in Muzaffargarh said: ‘Aasia was forced to marry Amjad against her will.
‘She was not happy and came back to her parents house after a few days into marriage but her family forcibly sent her back to her in-laws’ house.

‘Aasia concocted the plot to avenge being married against her will and was provided with poisonous substance by her alleged lover, Shahid Lashari.

‘But the plot went awry when Aasia’s husband did not drink the glass of milk she handed to him. Instead, her mother-in-law used the tainted milk to make Lassi.’

Pictured: Wife who accidentally killed 15 of her in-laws in plot to kill husband

Police said that initially Aasia claimed that a lizard had fallen into the milk, poisoning it.
‘But she confessed her role in the custody,’ said police.

Three people including Aasia’s alleged lover and her aunt, who are suspected to have a role in the whole plot, have been arrested by police.

However, the young woman denied all of the allegations levelled against her when the accused were presented before the media.

She said: ‘Shahid told me to poison the beverage but I didn’t do it. He asked me to marry him but I refused.’

Although Pakistan recently strengthened laws designed to prevent child marriage and forced conversion, there is little legal remedy for women who reject a partner chosen for them by their family.

Pakistan accounted for the highest number of forced marriages reported to the UK’s Forced Marriage Unit in 2016.

Incidents of poisoning are common in the Punjab, where marrying out of choice remains an anomaly.
Last month a newly-married couple were poisoned for unknown reasons by the family of the bride.

A man in a rented van mowed down cyclists and pedestrians in New York killing eight people in what the city’s mayor called ‘a particularly cowardly act of terror’.

He careered down a popular cycle path a few streets from the World Trade Centre memorial injuring at least 11 people.

The 29-year-old driver, named by authorities as Sayfullo Saipov, was shot in the stomach by police and arrested after jumping out of the van with what turned out to be a fake gun in each hand and shouting ‘Allahu Akbar!’

The suspect, originally from Uzbekistan, has a Florida driving licence but may have been living in New Jersey.

Uber confirmed that Saipov was one if its drivers, and the company said he passed a background check and had been actively driving on the platform for more than six months.
He has since been banned from the Uber app.

‘We are horrified by this senseless act of violence,’ the company said in a statement. ‘Our hearts are with the victims and their families. We have reached out to law enforcement to provide our assistance.’

The driver in Tuesday’s attack barrelled along the bike path in a rented Home Depot truck for the equivalent of about 14 blocks, or around eight-tenths of a mile, before slamming into a small yellow school bus.

The mayhem and the burst of police gunfire set off panic in the neighbourhood and left the pavement strewn with mangled bicycles and bodies that were soon covered with sheets.

‘I saw a lot of blood over there. A lot of people on the ground,’ said Chen Yi, an Uber driver.
Eugene Duffy, a chef at a waterfront restaurant, said: ‘So many police came and they didn’t know what was happening. People were screaming. Females were screaming at the top of their lungs.’

Police closed off streets across the western edge of Manhattan along the Hudson River and officers rushed into the neighbourhood just as people were preparing for Halloween festivities, including the big annual parade through Greenwich Village.

‘This was an act of terror, and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians, aimed at people going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them,’ New York’s mayor Bill de Blasio said.

New York’s governor, Andrew Cuomo called it a ‘lone wolf’ attack and said there was no evidence to suggest it was part of a wider plot.

On Twitter, president Donald Trump called it ‘another attack by a very sick and deranged person’ and declared, ‘NOT IN THE U.S.A.!’

While police did not specifically blame the Islamic State group for the New York bloodshed, Mr Trump railed against the extremist group, tweeting, ‘We must not allow ISIS to return, or enter, our country after defeating them in the Middle East and elsewhere. Enough!’

Records show Saipov was a commercial truck driver who formed a pair of businesses in Ohio after moving to the US.

The first business, Sayf Motors Inc., used the address of a family friend near Cincinnati with whom Saipov had stayed for a couple of weeks after his arrival in the country.
The second, Bright Auto LLC, used an address near Cleveland.

A trucking industry website listed Saipov at a Paterson, New Jersey, address that authorities were searching on Tuesday night.

Court records related to trucking-related infractions list Saipov with addresses in Paterson and the Cleveland suburbs.'

The family friend with whom Saipov stayed in Ohio, Dilnoza Abdusamatova, told The Cincinnati Enquirer Saipov was ‘really calm’ and worked hard.

‘He always used to work,’ Ms Abdusamatova said. ‘He wouldn’t go to parties or anything. He only used to come home and rest and leave and go back to work.’

Police said Saipov rented the truck at about 2pm in New Jersey, entering the bike path about an hour later on West Street a few blocks from the new World Trade Centre, the site of the deadliest terror attack in US history.

The truck then turned at Chambers Street, hitting the school bus and injuring two adults and two children.

Five sex workers were involved in a serious fight over missing N32,000, being the amount one of them realised from various clients.

The incident happened at a hotel located at Banjoko Street at Ilasamaja area of Lagos where the workers ply their trade.

The workers were Amarachi Okereke, Akpan Cynthia, Blessing John, Loveth Bassey and Grace Okafor.

During interrogation, Amarachi was unable to prove how the other four ladies broke her room and stole the money. She was charged for assault and false information.

Amarachi was then taken to the Isolo Magistrates court and charged for the alleged offence.

She pleaded not guilty.

The presiding Magistrate, Mrs. A.O. Adedayo granted her bail in the sum of N50,000 with one surety in like sum.

However, Amarachi was remanded in prison custody pending when she will perfect her bail condition. The four other women were released after standing as witness on the alleged offence committed by Amarachi.

Residents of Imota Ikorodu, Lagos State are still gasping in shock, following the gruesome murder of some young men in the area by cultists At least a boy was alleged to have been beheaded and three others killed in their apartment, in the presence of their stunned parents, in what law enforcement officers claimed was a reprisal.

The clash was between members of Eiye and Aiye. The killings started on Friday and between Saturday and yesterday, policemen and members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), had arrested 31 suspected cult members. Yesterday, residents of Imota told our correspondent that cultists have taken over their community. One of the residents said: “There’s no day we don’t witness cult related killings in the community.”

A team of Anti-Cultism Unit, Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC) and OPMESSA were deployed to the community to restore peace. In the process, 31 suspected cult members were arrested between Saturday and Sunday.

The Coordinator of OPC in the community, Mr. John Ojuelegba, said the rate of killings by the various groups was getting out of control. His words: “I was in my house, when the DPO called me about the cultists’ unrest.

I mobilised my boys and we went to town. We started picking them. On Saturday alone, we arrested 19 and on Sunday, 12. They have all been transferred to Anti-Cultist Unit of the State Command.

What surprised me was that the Aiye group was going into Eiye group members’ houses to wake them in their parents’ houses. They killed them right in their parents’ presence. Three Eiye members were killed at different locations.

These boys have turned the community into slaughter slab.” Mrs. Iyabo Adekunle, stepmother of the first victim that was killed, identified as Tunji, said she was shocked to hear that the boy was a cultist.

She was in her shop on that fateful Friday, when she heard gunshots. She said: “I locked my shop and ran home. About five minutes later, someone came to call me that my son had been shot dead.

My husband and some other members of the family followed us to the scene. When we got there, Tunji’s corpse was inside the gutter. His body was covered in blood.

When he was brought out, we noticed that he was shot in four different places.

“We informed the policemen at Imota Police Station. We buried him that same night. I don’t know what could have led to anyone killing him. It was because my husband didn’t want him relating with bad boys, that he moved him from Mushin area to Imota.

We didn’t know he was still relating with bad boys.” Mr. Bambo Shokoya, a resident, disclosed that in September, two persons were killed in the community. He said that the reasons why the boys keep killing one another, is still difficult to know.

He said: “The present killing started on Friday around 11pm, at Atere area. Some Aiye members laid ambush for Tunji, who belonged to Eiye group. He was shot four times and his body dumped inside a gutter. Before they left, they were singing and dancing over the successful killing of Tunji.”

Shokoya further said that the most annoying aspect of the issue was that most of the cultists had been discovered to be school dropouts, bricklayers, vulcanizers and meat sellers. He urged government to look into the issue of cultism, before cultists wipe out members of an entire community. Our correspondent further gathered that it was after the rival group killed Tunji, that his angry members decided to carry out a reprisal.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), ASP Olarinde Famous- Cole, said it was a clash between two rival cult groups, which started since the beginning of this year. He disclosed that the clash culminated in the beheading of a cultist.

He said in a quick response of the command, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in charge of Imota Police Station arrested 14 of the suspects. Famous- Cole further said that an additional suspect had been arrested and moved with others to Anti-Cultist Unit of the command for further investigation.

Mercy Olamide Afolaranmi, a student of Microbiology at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has committed suicide.
According to the school’s Chief Security Officer, Babatunde Oyatokun, Miss Afolaranmi, poisoned herself. Students and a neighbour close to the deceased also said she killed herself due to poor grade.

“We got a call that one of our students took poison,” Mr. Oyatokun said. “We got to hospital to realise that she mixed rat poison. She gave us the contact of her parents but before they arrived, she already gave up due to the effect of the poison she took.”

A neighbour, Bimpe Oni, in an interview with PREMIUM TIMES, said Miss Afolaranmi, who lived off-campus at Sabo area of Ile-Ife, died on Thursday, after she took “rat poison mixed with battery extract.”

Mrs. Oni said the late student committed suicide because of “emotional pressure.” A student, Aisha, who was Miss Afolaranmi’s colleague in the Faculty of Science, said the deceased had ‘E’ in CHM101 (Chemistry for first year students), a reportedly dreaded course for year one students in the science and technology related faculties.

“Mercy often isolated herself in class and looked depressed,” said Aisha. “She told me she had ‘E’ in CHM101 and has been going around unhappy before this incident.” Another student in the Faculty of Student, Opeyemi, said “she took poison because of result.”

The school’s Dean of Students’ Affairs, Isiaka Aransi, also confirmed the news. “Although the reason and cause of her death is yet to be known, the division is aware of the death of Mercy,” she said.

Before her death, on October 10, she posted on Facebook that: “Above all other things, I just wanna see God, see what He looks like, speak with Him face to face. I don’t wanna miss heaven. LORD HELP ME.”
